One-Island Pond in Mitcham Common is a haven for wildlife and an oasis of calm and natural beauty right in the heart of suburban South London, in the UK. It is nestled in a large group of trees and bushes within a section of the Common that is hardly visited.
This was shot using a 550nm Candy Chrome colour IR filter, then processed from the initially deep red RAW image using basic red/blue channel swaps and then some slight fine-tuning adjustments with curves and hue/saturation controls. The end result is a very attention-grabbing combination of rich blues and very delicate, slightly washed-out gold-tinged foliage.
This filter is designed to block light that is below the 550nm wavelength, which is some green (which is roughly 500-600nm) and all blue (roughly 400-500nm) from visible light. This allows the infrared portion (roughly 700nm up to 1000nm or so) of what’s captured to be the biggest part of the ‘punch’ while still recording some visible colour information.
